We’ve all been there.

Apple announces the latest update of the iOS; we see that little red notification on the Settings icon, and without even thinking twice, or reading the Change-Log, we immediately proceed to download and install the latest update; only to find out that we don’t really like it and it’s probably messing with some other key functions of your iPhone. Feeling buyer’s remorse, aye? If only there was a way to reverse this and go back to the old versions of iOS, how cool would that be? Well worry not, there is a way to Downgrade your iOS to the previous version.

Now, the process of Downgrading your iOS to the previous version is quite lengthy; it requires Jailbreaking your iPhone. So I won’t be getting into that part, at least not in this post. Maybe I’ll do a post at some point in the future, explaining in detail the process of Jailbreaking your iPhone and Downgrading your iOS to the previous version. Instead, in this blog post, I’ll be discussing the Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) Mode, which is required to Downgrade your iOS.

So, without further ado, the steps to Enable the DFU Mode on your iPhone are as follows:

Entering DFU Mode (Official Instructions)

  • Plug your device into your computer.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
  • Hold the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power Button but keep holding the Home button.
  • Keep holding the Home button until you are alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

*Make sure the device screen is blank and no logos are present.

Exiting DFU Mode:

Hold Home and Power Button till the Apple Logo appears

IMPORTANT:

The DFU Mode and the Recovery Mode are two completely different Modes.

The Recovery Mode is used when iTunes doesn’t recognize your iOS Device, and you can’t Update or Restore your device to its original state.

The DFU Mode is used when you want to either Upgrade, Downgrade, or Jailbreak your iPhone (iOS Device). The DFU Mode basically bypasses your current iOS, which allows you to Upgrade or Downgrade to previous versions.

Usually when Jailbreaking your iPhone, the Software does all the work for you. All you have to do is: Plug your iPhone to your computer, wait for the computer to recognize your device, and simply run the Jailbreaking Software. After you’ve successfully Jailbroken your iPhone, you can then Downgrade your iOS and also install all the cool Black Market iPhone Apps.

Note:

I DO NOT Endorse Jailbreaking your iPhone. But the iOS is inherently limited in the things that it can do; which is why many people choose to Jailbreak their iPhone, so that they can enjoy the forbidden fruits of Black Market iPhone Apps.
